8GB iPhone dropped to $399.. What??

One month and 2 days after purchasing my iPhone, Steve Jobs walks on stage and tells the world that he is lowering the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399!! Now is it me or does that just suck for those of us that have already purchased our beloved little communications device?

Hell, at that price, I would’ve bought 2 of them. One for my wife as well.

Dont get me wrong, Im glad they dropped the price of them so more people can afford them but damn! The timing just sucks!

  1. I got mine about 1 month and a week ago and while it is a shocker, I love the damn thing so much that it really doesn’t bother me. I would assume that either right before xmas or right after new years they will bring out the 16gb model at a higher price.

What actually does excite me about this is that I know when they come out with 2nd generation the price should be lower then what we paid.

  2. They don’t call it the bleeding edge for nothing. ๐Ÿ™‚

As much as I love Apple, this is typical behavior from them. I tend to wait until gen 2 or 3 of Apple devices for this very reason. This is a pretty egregious example though. If Apple wants to do the right thing they’ll send rebates to the early adopters.

  3. Yeah.. Im kind of used to it in a way but this is just a bit extreme. Such a drastic cut 2 months after release… and I bought mine on August 2nd. So just over a month. Thats pretty bad. I doubt anyone will see a rebate. Afterall, I think the last number I saw was somewhere in the neighborhood of 700,000 iPhones sold, that was a couple weeks ago.

    700,000 * $200 = $140,000,000

Nah, probably not going to see any type of rebate, but I wouldnt mind a $200 apple store credit, or $200 in iTunes credits! That would make up for it!

  4. The iPhone was overpriced anyway (big price tag AND big monthly minimum spend on the AT&T contract), and it still has to compete with Windows Mobile phones that are half the price (on a contract) even after this price reduction. Like others said though – you want Apple, you pay the price.

Still, you have my sympathy because such a big price drop so soon after launch is really like kicking sand in your face. I think it’s a totally lame move without offering rebates to early adopters, but my fingers are crossed anyway.

  5. You act surprised, like you didn’t know that iPhones would getter cheaper down the line. Now Apple has milked their fan boys (who pay the big bucks for their products because it makes them feel cool) they need a bigger market for their product and this market is not going to shell out the fan boy price for a dickie gadget… You could have just waited…

Actually yes, I am surprised. When you buy any piece of technology you expect some sort of price reduction down the line. Thats no secret. But your missing the point. The problem is that the price reduction was 33% of the price and it came just 2 months after release.

There are already reports of people getting refunds and Im in the process of it now. So evidently it was a bigger issue that they thought.

And as far as waiting goes. I was waiting, I didnt buy one when they first released. The only reason I bought mine a month ago was because the 8125 I was using was having major trouble, every call was dropping within 3 minutes of either making or receiving it. So I figured why not go ahead and upgrade to the iPhone. So I wasnt one of the "cool kids on the block" to get one of the first iPhones in town. Hell, most of the people I hang out with dont even know what the damn thing is and couldnt care less.

  7. Not sure if this one is true … I just read it
    From: http://www.frogameleon.com/blog/to-all-iphone-customers

"[Apple] have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Appleโ€™s website next week. Stay tuned."

  8. @big monthly minimum spend on the AT&T contract
Ok so its $20 more a month for the iphone which gives you unlimited web access and visual voice mail, I don’t get why people cry about that?

Hell I was just with verizon and my base 1400 minute plan is the same price as att and if I would have added internet to the verison plan it would have tacked on $49 a month more, so the att plan comes in $30 a month cheaper.. So please tell me how the att plan is so much?
